New
NCSU BAS Chapter Formed
2.28.07
NC State University has been the home of many African
American students as well as other minorities for
several decades now. Many graduates have since then
gone on to obtain great achievements in both careers,
businesses as well as local communities. Many of
these alumni students have migrated to the northeast
region of the country and made their home in Washington,
DC.
The local population is NC State Alumni is steadily
increasing. This rapid growth has fueled the much
anticipated launch of a new chapter in the Washington,
DC area for the Black Alumni Society of NC State
University.
The mission of the BAS is to foster opportunities
for African American alumni, students, faculty, staff
and university friends to become actively involved
in enriching NC State now and in the future. Chapter
President William Johnson says, "I love NC State!
If it were not for NC State I wouldn’t be where
I am today! I just want to be able to give back to
the school and show my appreciation."
Johnson has put together a great team that he's
also excited about as well. Serving on the executive
board as Vice President is, Barba M. Koroma; Advisor & Treasurer
is Bobby Barnes; filling the position of Secretary
is Latonya Jeffress; Event Coordinator, Sydney B.
Williams; Webmaster, Angus Small; Board Advisor,
Harold B. Pettigrew and of course William Johnson
as Chapter President.
The group is planning a kick-off event to inform
and celebrate the chapter's grand opening. This event
will be held on March 7th at 201 Lounge in downtown
Washington, DC from 6-9pm. Johnson says "This
is just the beginning of what we'd like to do not
only for the community but to keep school spirit
alive even though we've all graduated. We're still
in the planning phases for the organization but much
more is soon to come!"
